Aromatherapy & Essential Oils
Cap Coder builds liquid filling machines, small-bottle filling machines and capping machines for UK aromatherapy businesses, from single essential oils and blends through to carrier oils, massage oils, roll-ons and diffuser oils. Each aromatherapy and essential oil filling line is specified around oils that are costly, volatile and quick to attack the wrong plastic or seal, and around the small amber glass bottles and closures they are sold in.
What Aromatherapy & Essential Oils Producers Need to Work Out Before Buying a Filling or Capping Machine
Aromatherapy and essential oil filling looks simple. The oils are thin, they pour freely and the bottles are small. In practice they are among the more demanding liquids a small filling line handles: a few drops of overfill on every 10ml bottle adds up to real money, the oils can soften or swell the wrong components, many are flammable, and their hazard classification often decides which closure has to go on the bottle.
Oil behaviour and material compatibility
- The range of products you fill, from thin single oils to more viscous carrier and massage oil blends
- Compatibility of every contact part, including tubing, seals and nozzles, with terpene-rich oils such as citrus oils that can attack some plastics and elastomers
- Low surface tension and creep, which make drips, wet bottle necks and slow leaks past a closure more likely than with water-based products
- Volatility and oxidation, which affect how long product sits exposed in an open hopper or reservoir
- The value of the oil per millilitre, which sets how much fill accuracy is worth paying for
Product classification and regulation
- Whether a product is a cosmetic, such as a massage oil or roll-on intended for the skin, under the Cosmetic Products Enforcement Regulations 2013, overseen by the Office for Product Safety and Standards
- For cosmetic products, whether manufacture is run to ISO 22716 good manufacturing practice
- For pure oils and diffuser products not applied to the body, classification and labelling under GB CLP and general safety duties under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005
- Whether any product carries claims to treat or prevent a condition, which may bring it within the remit of the MHRA
- Whether customers or retailers expect blends to follow IFRA Standards, which can affect formulation changes and batch records
Throughput, SKUs and line integration
- Output needed per shift, and how much of your aromatherapy and essential oil filling is currently done by hand with pipettes or dispensers
- The number of essential oils and aromatherapy blends run through the filling line, often a large catalogue of small batches rather than a few long runs
- How aroma carryover between oils is prevented, whether by flushing, dedicated contact parts or replaceable tubing
- Integration of aromatherapy and essential oil capping with with insert fitting, capping, labelling, cartoning and gift-set assembly
- Whether a semi-automatic machine is the right first step from hand filling, with a path to automation as volumes grow
Bottles, inserts and closures
- Container sizes, commonly amber or cobalt glass from 5ml upwards, plus larger bottles for carrier oils and trade packs
- Inserts that sit in the neck of aromatherapy and essential oil bottles before capping: orifice reducers, integral droppers or roller-ball fitments, and whether these are fitted by hand or by machine
- Closure types for aromatherapy and essential oil capping: tamper-evident caps, child-resistant caps, glass pipette droppers, roll-on caps and pump dispensers
- Whether a product’s GB CLP classification, often an aspiration hazard for oils sold to the public, means it needs a child-resistant fastening and a tactile warning of danger
- Batch and best-before coding, and whether labels are applied to such small containers on the same line
Flammability and workplace safety
- The flash points of the essential oils on your aromatherapy filling line, since many are flammable liquids
- Whether the quantities stored and decanted mean the filling area needs a DSEAR assessment, and whether that identifies a zone requiring rated equipment
- Vapour and skin exposure for operators under COSHH, particularly for oils classed as skin sensitisers
- Containment of drips and spills, which can be slippery as well as flammable
- Bulk storage and transfer from drums or bulk containers to the filling machine
Commercial and lifecycle support
- Lead time for the machine, and for additional format parts when a new contract arrives at short notice
- Whether trials can be run on a new customer’s product and containers before you commit to a price
- UK-based service, spare parts and calibration, since downtime on a contract line delays someone else’s product launch
- Operator training that covers changeover and set-up, not just day-to-day running
- A route from semi-automatic machines to automated lines as contract volumes grow
Filling and Capping Machines and Processes Cap Coder Provides to Aromatherapy & Essential Oils Producers
Cap Coder has manufactured filling, capping and labelling machinery in the UK since 1976. The current range, from the Sigma Fill through to the CC1160, is specified for aromatherapy producers who need tight fill accuracy on small, high-value volumes, contact parts that stand up to essential oils, and closures applied firmly enough to stop thin oils escaping.
Essential oil filling machines
Volumetric, piston and peristaltic filling heads chosen for thin, low surface tension oils and heavier carrier blends alike, with fill accuracy prioritised because product given away on small bottles of expensive oil soon becomes a significant cost.
Contact parts chosen for essential oils
Tubing, seals and product contact parts on our aromatherapy and essential oil filling machines, selected against the oils you actually fill, including citrus and other terpene-rich oils, so components do not swell, soften or shed into the product over time.
Dropper, roll-on and small-bottle filling
Filling machines set up for small glass dropper and roll-on bottles as well as larger carrier oil bottles, with format parts that let one machine move between bottle sizes as your catalogue demands.
Capping machines for oil-tight closures
The CC570 semi-automatic inline capper applies consistent torque at up to 35 bottles per minute. Essential oils find their way past a loosely applied cap, so consistent torque in aromatherapy capping protects both the product and the customer, and supports child-resistant and tamper-evident closures working as designed. Quick-release tooling changes format in around five minutes, and a Zone 1 or Zone 2 ATEX build is available where your filling area is zoned.
Torque transducers for closure records
Fitted to the MK VI capping head, an independently calibrated, UKAS-traceable torque transducer records application and release torque to within 0.1% resolution, with live values on the HMI and export to CSV, XML or a US Digital-compliant file. Sampling can be set at one closure in every 10, 20 or 50, and out-of-tolerance closures are rejected or flagged, helping catch the under-tightened caps that lead to leaking essential oil bottles and returns on an aromatherapy capping line.
Documentation for cosmetic and consumer products
Documentation suited to the way your products are regulated, from records supporting ISO 22716 for massage oils and other cosmetic products to the standard machine documentation for pure oils and diffuser products.
From hand filling to automation
For aromatherapy and essential oil filling, a semi-automatic machine is often the first step away from working by hand. Lines are designed so that step can later be followed by full automation, keeping the format parts and settings already proven on your oils and bottles.
Filling and Capping Machines Built to UK and EU Safety Standards
Before a machine can be trusted with your oils, it has to be safe to work alongside. Each Cap Coder machine is built in accordance with the Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC) and the UK Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, and is delivered CE marked with a Declaration of Conformity. Hazards are dealt with during design, when they are easiest to remove, so protection is engineered into the machine rather than bolted on after it is assembled.
CE Marked Filling and Capping Machines
Every machine is CE marked and issued with a Declaration of Conformity, with its technical construction file kept for the full service life of the machine.
Risk Assessment on Every Build
Each build is risk assessed in a structured way, with design changes preferred over warning signs and working procedures wherever a hazard can be engineered out.
Machine Guarding, Interlocks & Light Curtains
Guards and interlocks are matched to the hazards of your process, with light curtains or safety scanners added where the risk assessment shows they are needed.
Safety-Rated Emergency Stop Circuits
Emergency stop and interlock circuits are built to a defined performance level, so they can be relied on to bring the machine to a safe state whenever they are used.
Declaration of Conformity & Full Documentation
A Declaration of Conformity, user manual, electrical and mechanical drawings and maintenance guidance are supplied with each machine, giving your team what it needs to use and inspect it in line with PUWER.
Built Around Your Operators
Simple HMIs and good access for cleaning and changeover suit smaller teams moving from hand filling, where operators need a machine that is quick to learn and hard to misuse.
EU/UK Standards
Machines are designed with reference to harmonised EU/UK standards, including EN ISO 12100 for risk assessment and risk reduction, EN ISO 13849 for safety-related parts of control systems, and EN 60204-1 for electrical equipment. The standards applied to a particular machine are recorded in its technical file and Declaration of Conformity.
Aromatherapy & Essential Oils FAQs
GENERAL ANSWER
Stainless steel and glass are generally unaffected, but many plastics, rubbers and tubing materials are not. Terpene-rich oils such as citrus oils are particularly aggressive, so compatibility is best confirmed against the specific oils you fill rather than assumed from a general chart.
CAP CODER’S APPROACH
We ask for your oil list and safety data sheets, select contact parts accordingly and test on your own oils before delivery, so compatibility problems are found at the factory rather than on your line.
GENERAL ANSWER
Often, yes. Many essential oils are classified as an aspiration hazard under GB CLP, and when such products are supplied to the general public, CLP requires child-resistant fastenings and a tactile warning of danger. Each oil or blend needs classifying individually, which is a matter for your own regulatory advice.
CAP CODER’S APPROACH
Once your closure is chosen, we set capping torque for each aromatherapy or essential oil product to the range its manufacturer specifies, and can measure and record it, so the child-resistant mechanism performs as intended.
CAP CODER’S APPROACH
Guarding, interlocks and emergency stops are standard on every machine we build. Light curtains, safety scanners or links to wider line safety systems can be added where your risk assessment calls for them.
GENERAL ANSWER
Not necessarily. Many essential oils are flammable, so a DSEAR assessment is needed, but whether it results in a zoned area depends on the oils, the quantities handled, temperatures and ventilation. Rated equipment is required only where a zone is identified.
CAP CODER’S APPROACH
Where your assessment identifies a zone, capping machines for aromatherapy and essential oil lines can be built for Zone 1 or Zone 2, including an all-pneumatic control option for the more demanding zone.
CAP CODER’S APPROACH
PUWER compliance is the employer’s duty, but every machine comes with the manual, drawings and maintenance guidance your team needs to operate, inspect and maintain it safely.
